BLM to Revise Baker Resource Area Resource Management Plan for OR & WA
BLM’s Baker Field Office has published a notice of intent to revise the Resource Management Plan (RMP) for the Baker Resource Area of the Vale District with an associated Environmental Impact Statement (EIS). The planning area encompasses approximately 423,000 acres in Baker, Union, Wallowa, Morrow, and Umatilla Counties in Oregon and in Asotin County, Washington. BLM has identified public access and OHV management among the specific issues relevant to the initial scoping phase of the RMP revision. BLM will seek to identify where better access is warranted, where it should remain the same, and where it should be restricted. Public scoping meetings will subsequently be scheduled to discuss these issues.
Comments regarding the scope of the RMP revision will be accepted until 30 days after the last public scoping meeting. Click here to view a list of scheduled open house scoping meetings. Comments may be submitted by email to bakerrmp@blm.gov, by fax to 541-523-1965, or by mail to:

Group seeks volunteers to clean up timberlands
OLYMPIA - Members of the Eyes in the Woods organization will be clearing litter from private timberlands in western Washington this month, and the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife (WDFW) is encouraging hunters to lend a hand.
Eyes in the Woods, a non-profit volunteer organization dedicated to fish and wildlife stewardship, is sponsoring clean-up events in the following areas:
Olympic Peninsula: Participants will meet at 9 a.m. June 21 at the WDFW Region 6 Office, 48 Devonshire Rd. in Montesano. The clean-up effort, focusing on timberlands managed by Weyerhaeuser and the Campbell Group, will continue until 6 p.m.
Mount St. Helens: Participants will meet at 9 a.m. at Drews Grocery on State Route 504 in Toutle. The clean-up effort will focus on Weyerhaeuser’s Mount St. Helens Tree Farm and will continue until 6 p.m.

Dave Ware, WDFW game manager, said Eyes in the Woods volunteers play an important role in wildlife management by monitoring hunter activity, staffing check stations, posting signs and assisting the department in a variety of other ways.
The upcoming clean-up effort is another example of those efforts, Ware said.
"Access to private lands is a major issue for hunters and this department," Ware said. "This is a way for hunters to show their appreciation for landowners who open their lands for outdoor recreation."

Jones Creek ORV Trail Clean Up Event |

Come and show your support for the Jones Creek ORV Trail on
Saturday April 26, 2008 and join the Dept. of Natural Resources
and motorized recreation organizations in getting this popular trail ready
for summer! Volunteer registration will begin at 9:00AM, and work will
continue until approximately 2:00PM and will be followed by a
volunteer appreciation barbeque! Please bring a side dish to share with
fellow participants.
Projects will include: trailhead maintenance such as restroom
painting, beginners riding area trail maintenance, litter removal, and trail
maintenance such as signage installation, brushing, puddle draining, etc.
Volunteers should bring: work gloves, water, and a side dish for
the after party, and wear work or hiking boots and rain or shine
outerwear. Volunteers are also encouraged to bring tools/equipment that
might be handy for the projects.

Jones Creek ORV Trail Clean Up Event
Directions to Jones Creek ORV Trail and Trailhead
Route from I-5: Take I-205 exit and then take the Orchard Exit (Exit 30) and curve around over
Freeway to first light and take right onto State Route 500/Fourth Plain Road. Follow Fourth Plain out
of town to Northeast 53rd Street. Follow 53rd Street east until it becomes Bradford Road.
Follow Bradford Road to Ireland Road and turn left, followed by another left onto Lessard Road.
After about two miles Lessard Road becomes Boulder Creek Road and leads to the Jones Creek
Trailhead.

Trail Riders receive state grant for Jones Creek
CAMAS - The Jones Creek Trail Riders Association has received a $43,628 state grant to maintain the 14-mile network of all-terrain-vehicle and dirt bike trails at Jones Creek in eastern Clark County.
The money comes from the National Recreation and Trails Program administered by Washington's Recreation and Conservation Office.
Members of the association will contribute an additional $18,800 in volunteer labor, fuel, cash and other donations during the two-year grant period. The trails are on the state Department of Natural Resources' Yacolt Burn State Forest. Jones Creek is the only local public area designated for dirt bike and all-terrain-vehicle use.
Mike Ames, public liaison for the Jones Creek Trail Riders Association, said his group was able to compete successfully for the state money based on past grant performance and ability to provide significant matching funds, primarily in donated labor.
"The grant helps to provide the resources - equipment, rock, blocks - necessary to maintain the motorized-use trails in the Jones Creek area,'' Ames said. "Ultimately, it is the DNR's responsibility to maintain the trail system, but proper maintenance would not be possible without the association, along with grant funding.''
The club also has committed 100 hours of volunteer labor in riding areas of the Gifford Pinchot National Forest. Jones Creek Trail Riders Association members meet at 7 p.m. the last Wednesday of each month at Pied Piper Pizza, 12300 N.E. Fourth Plain Blvd. The meetings are open to the public.
